Water conservation
We are particularly committed to reducing our impact on water, as is the dairy sector as a whole. At Laïta we have reduced our water consumption by almost 20% since 2019 and are continuing our efforts. In 2025 we set out a plan to reduce water consumption across all our industrial sites, with the ambitious savings target of 25% by 2030, i.e. 800,000m³ of water. To achieve this, 16 million euros are being invested and all staff must adhere to a structured ‘5Rs’ approach: Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Release.
Refuse
The best way to save water is not to use it. Upstream of any investment project, the amount of water consumed by new equipment is systematically assessed and preference given to the solution and the technology that consumes the least water.
Reduce
With a view to continuous improvement, we ensure our teams are informed and fully committed to controlling water consumption in the workshops, and to researching new ways of optimising consumption. In Créhen (22), monitoring the flow rates of water used for pump seals saved more than 14,000 m³ of water in 2025. In Landerneau (29), on-site water consumption was reduced by more than 60,000m³ in 2025 due to the expertise and commitment of our teams.
In addition, the highest consumer of water across all our sites is the Cleaning-in-Place section. In 2024, Laïta set up a working group to improve and optimise the equipment there.
Recycle
Recycling is a major factor in water conservation for dairy industries that produce powdered milk and colostrum. These facilities evaporate around 87% of the water contained in milk to produce powder, and the water is recovered, treated and reused elsewhere on site.
In 2024, a decree concerning the reuse of Eaux de Concentration des Matières Laitières (ECML) [Concentrated Dairy Wastewater] was published, opening up new opportunities which enabled Laïta to reduce its overall water consumption by 15%.
Reuse
To go even further, Laïta is studying the possibility of reusing the effluent from sewage treatment plants for uses where there is no contact with foodstuffs. This approach will ultimately reduce the pressure on water resources, which is set to become increasingly restrictive in the years to come.
Release
The quality of water released into the environment is a major concern for Laïta. We are committed to releasing good-quality water into the environment out of respect for the ecosystem.
We have been concentrating our efforts in recent years on releasing less water into the environment, and ensuring that it is safe. In this regard we have installed a self-contained organic effluent treatment system at Ancenis (44), and a significant investment is earmarked for renovating the water treatment plant at Ploudaniel (29) in 2026-2027, in order to improve the quality of wastewater discharged into the environment and make it safe.
Meetings with NGOs
We hold regular meetings with environmental NGOs to discuss the situation on our sites and inform them of our plans for improvement. These discussions have resulted in a partnership agreement with the Breton conservation organisation Bretagne Vivante, which was signed in 2022.
The partnership will support Laïta in developing its biodiversity policy, planned for 2026, following diagnostics carried out in 2025 by three different organisations selected for specific site requirements.
