Water conservation - a shared ambition for Laïta sites

To tackle increasing challenges related to water resources, Laïta has established an ambitious approach to controlling consumption, delivered by a cross-departmental strategy with clear objectives and innovative solutions. All teams are working together to ensure the long-term preservation of this precious common resource - water.

A structured approach for long-term effectiveness

Following the drought in 2022, Laïta introduced a global strategy for better management of water consumption. The strategy is led by a cross-functional working group and is based on the 5Rs method - Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse and Release - to focus on each stage of the water cycle and encourage the sharing of good practice between industrial sites.

Concrete initiatives and innovative solutions are now in place at all Laïta sites, with the ambitious objective of reducing the organisation’s overall water consumption by 25% by 2030 (compared to 2018).

Practical site-based initiatives

Current projects include the reuse of processing water and the installation of storage facilities at some sites. These initiatives make optimal use of water on a daily basis and reduce overall consumption.

Taking innovation further

Laïta is also exploring innovative solutions to speed up the process, mainly through partnerships with start-ups. One of these is Zeni, a winner of the Even’Up call for projects, who are developing technology that uses microalgae for treating effluent.

Initial tests have been carried out with positive results, which opens up new prospects for treating and reusing water as part of a circular economy approach.

Water conservation

We are particularly committed to reducing our impact on water, as is the dairy sector as a whole. At Laïta we have reduced our water consumption by almost 20% since 2019 and are continuing our efforts. In 2025 we set out a plan to reduce water consumption across all our industrial sites, with the ambitious savings target of 25% by 2030, i.e. 800,000m³ of water. To achieve this, 16 million euros are being invested and all staff must adhere to a structured ‘5Rs’ approach: Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Release.
