Innovation through ecodesign - a new sustainable cardboard tub

With the introduction of this new range of yoghurts and fromages blancs in family-size tubs, Paysan Breton is making ecodesign a central element of its corporate responsibilities. From design through to production, this cross-functional project is a practical illustration of the brand’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging.

A collaborative effort from design to launch

In the very early stages of the project, the packaging department was charged with designing both the product container and the shipping carton. The brief was to identify the right partners and the right materials to respond to the brand specifications and industry requirements. We had to find the perfect balance of innovation, technical feasibility and environmental performance to satisfy the production line, the project team and the suppliers. We worked closely with the teams at Créhen and took into account the practical constraints at the Ploudaniel workshop. In the end we opted for the European suppliers who were existing partners of ours; they suggested the solution of custom-made cardboard tubs This is the first project I’ve worked on for the Paysan Breton brand and I’ve been involved from start to finish; it’s been a particularly motivating experience.

Solid progress in support of ecodesign

The new family-size tub is firmly in keeping with the 3Rs approach - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Only three packaging items are required for a single 500g sharing tub, as opposed to eight items for the 4x125g format, for the same quantity of yoghurt. The shipping carton has also been devised to respond to logistical and commercial requirements, and work is ongoing to further reduce the environmental impact of the packaging. Initial results have been promising, with recycling figures at almost 80%:

  • 78.1%* 500g tub + seal + lid
  • 79.2%* 800g tub + seal + lid

Every tub reflects a commitment to combining great taste with eco-design
