Investing in the continuity of the family farm

Jérôme and his brother are third-generation managers of their family farm. Jérôme gives us an insight into the investments they’ve made to achieve a better balance, by improving energy performance, working conditions and animal welfare.

Rethinking the organization of work

Jérôme, milk producer for Laïta, a member of Even

"Dairy farming has been in our family for three generations. It was my grandparents who first passed on their love of farming to me, followed by my parents. I took over the farm in January 2022 with around a hundred dairy cows and 95 hectares of land. We agreed that my brother David and I would take over when my parents retired, and it was the perfect opportunity to reorganise the work and modernise the equipment. The old milking shed with 2x5 stalls was built in 1998 and had become rather cramped. We replaced it with two milking robots to reduce the manual workload, and we can now take alternate weekends off."

Well-prepared to face the future

"We’ve also built an underpass under a busy road for the cows to walk through, so they can pass freely and in complete safety from the field to the milking shed. The shed itself has been equipped with automatic manure scrapers, massage brushes for the cows and cameras so we can keep an eye on the herd remotely. We’ve also installed a milk pre-cooler to improve our energy performance. These investments are the best possible preparation to take us into the future, along with the support of the cooperative, with which we maintain an open, uncomplicated relationship."
